Robert De Niro Insults ‘Blatant Racist’ Trump, Then Hints About Hollywood’s Plan for Emmys
It’s no secret that actor Robert De Niro isn’t a fan of President Donald Trump. But the Hollywood A-lister is firing both barrels at the president after the recent conflagration in Charlottesville, Virginia.
“[I]f he was smart, he’d be even more dangerous,” De Niro told Deadline Hollywood. “He’s dangerous as it is. He’s terrible, and a flat-out blatant racist and doubling down on that, and it’s good that he does because he’s going to sink himself.”
The multi-millionaire actor and patron of the Tribeca Film Festival also made it clear that he wasn’t a fan of the president “defunding the arts.” It is unclear why a percentage of the billions of dollars that pour into Hollywood each year can’t be redistributed back to communities in order to cultivate future screen talent. Apparently, it’s more convenient for already soaked taxpayers to support the non-profit-turning arts with their hard-earned dollars.
De Niro also hinted about what the annual ritual in celebrity self-congratulation known as the Emmys might have in store for Trump. Because what’s a Hollywood awards ceremony without bashing a Republican president?
“Even at the Emmys it should be a kind of theme in some way — however, you know, balanced it could be so we’re not making it all about that,” he said. “But at this point, we’re at a crisis in this country with this fool, who never should have gotten into the position that he’s in.”
De Niro also responded to Peter Hammond noting that vociferously anti-Trump late night host Stephen Colbert was hosting this years Emmys.
“Yeah, well, he’ll do it,” De Niro remarked. In terms of Trump-bashing, this year’s Emmys should be a real doozy.
